Conde de Valdemar Reserva 2004 Tempranillo

Spain is such an amazing wine country for value. Take this 2004 Reserva Rioja – it’s had all this time in the bottle to develop and integrate, yet it is still so affordable! Rioja is always a good choice for people who like more developed flavours and aromas in wine, but don’t want to wait to cellar wines themselves.

This wine is medium-bodied, complex and delicious with anything from meat to stews to cheeses.

Mike’s Pick: Portada's 2006 Vinho Regional - Lisboa, Portugal

BBQ season was made for wines like this. It’s medium-bodied with great berry-fruit flavours in addition to a rustic, earthy edge and a touch of spice. It’s got enough tannin to compliment any protein and enough acidity to wash down any fat. Lamb burgers would be a killer pairing. Get that grill fired up and pop open the Portada!

Mike’s Pick: M.Chapoutier's 2008 Bila Haut - Côtes du Roussillon, France

This is a great deal for a fan of Syrah, Grenache, Carignan blends like those from the Côtes du Rhône. The unique ‘garrigue’ landscape in the Roussillon, where only vines and herbs can thrive, gives a unique flavour to fruit.

This is a great choice if you are going as a guest to dinner and you don’t know what the host is cooking. It’s medium bodied and friendly with a wide variety of menu options.
